Overview of Fukuoka Airport

History of Fukuoka Airport

The construction of Fukuoka Airport, originally called Mushiroda Airfield, started in February 1944 by the Imperial Japanese Army. The runway was completed in May 1945, but after the war the airfield was condemned by the US Air Force and used as Itazuke Airbase from October 1945.

Under the control of the US Air Force, Fukuoka has evolved into one of the principal international airports in western Japan. In October 1951, the first civilian domestic air service commenced between Tokyo-Osaka-Fukuoka, andin September 1965,a regular international service between Fukuoka-Busan began.

In December 1970, the Security Consultative Committee agreed to restitute the base to the control of the Japanese Ministry of Transportation, and in April 1972, Fukuoka Airport was placed into service as second class airport run by the central government and became subject to the Law Concerning Prevention, etc., of Disturbance from Aircraft Noise in the Vicinity of Public Airports.

As of April 2017, Fukuoka Airport serves as major entryway to Kyushu serving 26 domestic and 19 international destinations and used by 23 million passengers annually.
